Rules of Golf

Know the rules. Protect your score. Play with confidence.

Why the Rules Matter

Knowing the rules of golf is one of the most valuable tools in your bag. The rules ensure fair and consistent play for everyone on the course, protecting your score and helping you avoid unnecessary penalties.

Scorecard

The Scorecard — don’t let a simple mistake cost you.

Most disqualifications are caused by scorecard errors, not how you play. Before you tee off, make sure your name is written clearly, the date and competition format are recorded, your handicap is correct, and the correct tee box is confirmed. Always hand your scorecard to your marker before starting your round.

During the round, communicate clearly with your marker, especially when receiving strokes. Ensure that the correct gross score is recorded after each hole and take a moment to confirm scores regularly.

After your round, carefully verify every hole score. Both the player and the marker must sign the scorecard before submission. Once submitted, no changes are allowed.

Remember: A disqualification is avoidable. A moment of care saves a season of regret.

Understanding the Basics

Key golf etiquette rules focus on safety, respect for others, and maintaining the course. These principles ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone on the course.

Safety First (“Fore!”): Always ensure no one is in danger before playing a shot. If your ball heads toward another player, shout “Fore!” immediately as a warning.

Keep Up the Pace of Play: Be ready when it’s your turn and avoid unnecessary delays. Playing “ready golf” helps keep the round flowing smoothly.

Be Quiet and Still: Remain silent and avoid movement while others are playing their shots. Respect concentration and maintain proper etiquette at all times.

Leave the Course as You Found It: Repair pitch marks, replace divots, and rake bunkers. The condition of the course depends on every player.

Respect the Putting Green: Avoid walking in another player’s line and stay out of their vision while putting.

Additional good habits include arriving early, limiting ball searches to three minutes, controlling your emotions, respecting dress codes, and always showing consideration for fellow players.
